Monthly mindful gardening activity

I talked in a previous blog about how gardening and floristry can help you to feel calmer and happier.  One of the main ways in which this monthly activity is so good is that it allows your brain to switch off from all the things running through it and focus solely on the activity in front of you.

Watching the progress of your seeds turn into plants and then to producing flowers is wonderfully rewarding and gives you an amazing sense of pride which in turn boosts your self-esteem and sense of worth.

The membership also contains plenty of other ideas for your daily mindful activities to get you outside and enjoying nature and feeling less stressed.  There have been a number of studies that show the wellbeing benefits of nature but one in particular reported that just 20 minutes in nature each day can reduce your cortisol levels (the stress hormone) by 10%.

If you are struggling to see where you will find 5 minutes a day let alone 20 minutes then that doesn’t mean a membership isn’t for you.  The programme encourages you to start small with taking just 5 minutes for yourself every day.  An activity done daily will soon become a habit which means you feeling less stressed and overwhelmed will become a way of life going forward.  You will find that once you manage to take 5 minutes to yourself every day this will grow to 10 minutes and beyond once you see the results this time is having on the way you feel.

Life lessons in Nature articles

Each month has a theme that is related to the monthly mindful gardening activity and within the community are articles that discuss how plants handle that theme and how we can apply these methods and ways of behaviours to our lives.  After all we are natural beings and sometimes it’s important to strip out all the noise and social conditioning we have been exposed to and go back to basics to inform ourselves.  Some of the upcoming themes are ‘Vulnerability’ and ‘It’s ok to fail’.

Journaling prompts

These go hand in hand with the Life lessons in Nature articles and encourage you to explore the theme of the month further within yourself.  As it is only by looking inward that we can make real changes to our behaviours and the way that we feel.  The journaling prompts are released weekly and can be used as that day’s mindful 5 minute activity.  If you’re new to journaling there are resources available within the membership to get you started.


Humans evolved as pack animals.  Women especially raised their young in a group and shared the domestic load. Modern life is very different.  We often live miles away from our family members and many of us may not know anyone that lives in our village or town let alone our street.  This puts a huge amount of strain on us and adds to our daily stress levels.

Now, I’m not suggesting that a Mind in Bloom membership can help you with your share of the childcare/ domestic load (although that would be lovely wouldn’t it!)

But what our community can do is to support you emotionally as you grow and find your way to calm and happiness.  We can provide encouragement and support when things go wrong or you are struggling to take the daily 5 minutes for yourself and come up with ways to help you get back to your daily practice.  We will be there to celebrate in your successes, the first little green shoot that emerges from the ground, the first flower head that opens, your first vase of flowers for your kitchen table.

Monthly garden Lives

As well as the Facebook group support network, a Mind in Bloom membership also offers you a chance once a month to connect with your fellow Mind in Bloomers live!  This is a great way to put faces to names and get to know each other further, be shown how to do that month’s mindful gardening activity by me (I can’t promise there won’t be any bloopers!) and ask questions on any gardening, floristry or wellbeing topics that you are finding challenging or need a little more support on.  

It has been widely reported that loneliness and isolation is worse for our health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day.  Mind in Bloom aims to remedy this by providing that support network to help you find your way to a calmer, happier version of yourself.
